Millie Peartree: COVID-19 Food Hero

by NYC Food Policy Editor

Why She’s a Food Hero: After losing her successful restaurant in the Bronx in late 2019, Millie Peartree turned to her community to give back. Her organization, Full Heart Full Bellies, provides food, PPE, and other household goods to Bronx children and families. Since April 2020, her organization has provided more than fifty thousand meals to the community.

Background: Peartree previously owned and operated Millie Peartree Fish Fry & Soul Food, a restaurant that had gained a loyal following since opening in 2017. The building needed repair to the gas lines, fixes that would take months, so Peartree moved into the catering world. However, COVID-19 struck, so Peartree switched gears again, this time using her catering company to provide meals to essential workers and children in the Bronx.

Work: Leading a team of volunteers, Peartree and her organization provide fresh-cooked hot meals for thousands of Bronx residents, primarily children.

Location: The Bronx

Awards, Praise and Honors: Peartree received a surprise grant of $15,000 from and was honored by Good Morning America in September 2020.
