Food Policy Media Award 2023: Jerusha Klemperer

by NYC Food Policy Editor

The Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center has announced its fifth annual Food Policy Media Award: one journalist who is working to transform the food system through media. This year’s award goes to Jerusha Klemperer.

Jerusha Klemperer is the Director of FoodPrint.org, a website dedicated to helping people understand the full impact of their food on animals, planet and people. For FoodPrint she hosts and produces the award-winning podcast “What You’re Eating.” Prior to leading FoodPrint, she was a co-founder and the Communications Director for FoodCorps, an organization that works with local communities around the country to serve healthy food in schools, and before that led campaigns at Slow Food USA, a national sustainable food organization based in New York City.

Pronouns: She/Her
Grew up in: New York City
Job Title/Organization or Company: Director, FoodPrint – an editorial project of the GRACE Communications Foundation.
Background and Education: I have a liberal arts undergrad degree in Religion and Women’s Studies and an MFA in acting. I was a working actor for nearly a decade before I decided about 18 years ago that I wanted to spend my days thinking about food and working towards a more holistically functioning food system.
One word you would use to describe our food system: A spicy Yiddish word that my mom would say.
Food policy hero: Patty Lovera, former Policy Director of Food and Water Watch, frequent podcast guest on “What You’re Eating.” So smart, and fighting the good fight for many years now.
Your breakfast this morning: Heritage Flakes cereal with organic milk.
Favorite food: Eggplant? Possibly. It’s too hard to pick!
Favorite last meal on Earth: https://modernloss.com/chicken-chow-found/
Favorite food hangout and why: My friend Hillary’s kitchen, eating and talking nonstop for hours. I’ll choose a home cooked meal (made by someone else, with love) over a restaurant meal any day.
