About the Organization:
Twenty years ago, Bishop Francisco Garmendia, Vicar of the South Bronx, and Mr. James P. McLaughlin, President of United Parcel Service (UPS), recognized a need in the community for a bilingual telephone counseling and referral service. The HopeLine became a single-stop center for people to turn to for advice and guidance. Today we have evolved into a full service outreach organization working in one of the poorest congressional districts in the United States. The HopeLine originated as a volunteer phone bank to assist these victims in both obtaining the assistance they were due and in coping with the trauma of the Happy Land fire. Since then, The HopeLine has evolved into a multi-faceted social service organization working with the most vulnerable members of the South Bronx community.
