What They Do: Headquartered in New York City, Re-Nuble is a leading developer of innovative, plant-based, animal-free agricultural technologies sourced from verified organic waste streams. 

Re-Nuble uniquely transforms food waste into plant-based technologies for both soil-based and hydroponic cultivation. Its core technology (a patent-pending device and trade secretly formulated fertilizer pellet) enables hydroponic farming to affordably and rapidly yield fully organic produce, where the only alternative is up to 69% more expensive.

Tinia Pina, the founder of Re-Nuble, was determined to make organic food more accessible and affordable by harnessing the untapped power of organic waste. She hoped to use food waste to increase the domestic supply of organic produce. Re-Nube provides hydroponic- and soil-growers a natural alternative to conventional, synthetic mineral salt fertilizer and helps farmers grow food and plants without using chemicals.

The company strives to demonstrate that food waste can serve as a viable and cost-efficient source of eco-friendly, biodegradable, and nontoxic plant-based nutrients for food production and, thereby, dramatically reduce the fertilizer supply chain’s carbon emissions while increasing movement towards sustainable and regenerative farming. 

How They Do It: According to their website, Re-Nuble’s nutrients are 15 times more cost competitive than inorganic fertilizers such as mineral salts.  It is also compatible with soilless and hydroponic systems and its one-year shelf-life allows farmers to significantly save on shipping and storage costs.

Their technology allows for ‘fast release’ of its organic nutrients, converting them into inorganic forms without the usage of soil bacteria and fungi. With the ability to store our product as “raw ingredients” for on-site nutrient production, a farmer has the control to produce as much nutrients needed, as needed based on specialty crop production requirements. 

Mission: Re-Nuble’s mission is to turn local communities’ consumed resources into valuable renewable inputs at minimal or zero cost to the environment.

Latest project/campaign: Currently, the Re-Nuble product is only available to select customers and partners. However, public release is planned for later this winter.

Interesting fact about how they are working to positively affect the food system: At the time Re-Nuble was founded in 2011, New York City was spending about $77 million dollars a year to send its organic waste to landfills in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and even China. Their goal was to come up with a liquid nutrient created from organic-certified produce waste in order to create closed-loop agriculture systems throughout America and the world, thus eliminating food waste and the use of chemical additives so that farmers and growers could feed their local communities instead of landfills. By catering to both soil and hydroponic growing, the organization supports a solution for greatly increasing our food production without overtaxing land and natural resources, or destroying wildlife habitats.
