Organization Name: Park Slope Christian Help, Inc.
Long Organization Description: SINCE 1971, CHIPS (Park Slope Christian Help, Inc.) has been a community of Brooklyn neighbors, volunteers, and friends who share a common spiritual vision to help those who are less fortunate. We prepare hot, nutritious meals and serve them to the needy in a caring and respectful environment. In addition to meals, we offer seasonal clothing, emergency pantry items, and shelter for young mothers and their children. Our dedication to service goes beyond the basic needs in the hope that all our disadvantaged brothers and sisters may find independence and the strength to meet life’s challenges. All our services are offered free of charge through the generosity of our community.
About the Organization: Community Help in Park Slope, Inc. (CHiPS), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit soup kitchen and women’s shelter in Park Slope, bordering Gowanus, that has provided hot meals to the hungry and homeless since 1971. CHiPS began providing transitional housing and support services for young mothers and their infants in the late 1990s, after the purchase of the CHiPS building at 200 4th Ave. CHiPS currently houses up to 8 pregnant and postpartum homeless young women at a time, along with their infants, in its Frances Residence above the soup kitchen. Last year, CHiPS served approximately 103,000 meals to its neighbors in need.
