Food Policy for Breakfast: Zoning and the City’s Food System: Opportunities to Shape Healthier Food Environments in NYC – Resources

by nycadmin
EH Building

By shaping the built environment, zoning can be a powerful tool to support a healthy, diverse food environment. This panel discusses food-specific zoning initiatives like Food Retail Expansion to Support Health (FRESH), which provides incentives for developers to build supermarkets in communities lacking food retailers, and Zone Green, which facilitates rooftop agriculture. It also explores the zoning decisions that determine the location and types of food-related facilities in our communities and encourage the construction of affordable housing, thus promoting a secure food environment.

Panelists:

Daniel Hernandez, Deputy Commissioner for Neighborhood Strategies of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development

Javier Lopez, Deputy Director of the Center for Health Equity, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Shai Lauros, Director of Community Development for Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation

Moderated by Nevin Cohen, Associate Professor, CUNY School of Public Health
