Communities for Healthy Food NYC is a three-year healthy food initiative to help low-income families live longer and healthier. This new program, seeded by the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, will incorporate healthy food strategies every step of the way and will expand access to healthy food in at-risk neighborhoods.  The program includes education of residence, housing staff, food vendors and community service providers on health, nutrition and food preparation as well as location of healthy food outlets in communities in need.

Communities for Healthy Food NYC is being implemented with community development corporation partners in four high need communities:

  1. West Harlem Group Assistance, Inc. in Harlem
  2. Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn,
  3. Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development Corporation in East Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn
  4.  New Settlement Apartments, in Mt. Eden, the Bronx

The New York City Food Policy Center is also conducting an evaluation of the impacts of the NYC Food and Fitness Partnership, a collaborative working to make active living and healthy eating the easy and affordable choice for Central Brooklyn residents of all ages and backgrounds. The Partnership is managed by the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, the nation’s first community development corporation that partners with residents and business to improve the quality of life of Central Brooklyn by fostering economic self sufficiency, enhancing family stability and growth, promoting the arts and culture and transforming the neighborhood into a safe, vibrant place to live, work and visit. Central Brooklyn qualifies as a “food desert”, where lack of advocacy and access to healthy foods prevents residents from making healthy choices about the food they eat. Restoration is leading efforts to increase access to affordable and nutritious foods in Central Brooklyn as well as to enhance the number of public spaces that are safe and conducive to exercise and physical activity, with the ultimate goal of making the healthy choice the easy and affordable choice for residents of our community.
