Coronavirus NYC Food Resource Guide: Midtown
As New York City faces increasing closures and changes to everyday life due to coronavirus (COVID-19), the HUNTER COLLEGE NYC FOOD POLICY CENTER aims to provide additional resources and support to community members whose lives are impacted by COVID-19.
Below is a resource guide with the following information: meals for children, meals for seniors, retail food stores and their delivery/benefits policies, local food pantries and soup kitchens, resources for homeless people, resources for immigrant populations and resources for people with disabilities.
The Center has also included citywide organizations and additional resources for New Yorkers, which are applicable to community members outside of Midtown as well. If you have family, friends or co-workers in other neighborhoods, please refer to our website where we have published additional reports. Please always call the listed organizations before visiting to get the latest information about their services, as many are changing daily.
If you or someone you know has additional questions or is facing hunger or food insecurity please contact us at info@nycfoodpolicy.org or call the following organizations:
- USDA National Hunger Hotline (Hunger Free America): 1-866-3-HUNGRY or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (para español); Monday through Friday (7 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET)
- HRA’s Emergency Food Hotline: 866-888-8777
- Shelter or Temporary Housing Assistance: 3-1-1
Midtown Food Pantries and Soup Kitchens
The Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center is collaborating with Plentiful: a completely free, easy-to-use reservation system for food pantries and the people they serve. Through their database, the information below is constantly updated with the latest opening hours and/or changes due to COVID-19.
Many pantries require identification but may be making exceptions under the COVID-19 pandemic. Please call to see if identification is required.
EMERGENCY HELP NEEDED: Millions of New Yorkers rely on food pantries and soup kitchens to survive. To date, ⅓ have closed in NYC due to COVID-19. They relied on retired seniors to volunteer and since seniors can no longer safely leave their homes, pantries are in desperate need of young and healthy volunteers.
VOLUNTEER TO SERVE EMERGENCY FOOD TODAY WITH IN IT TOGETHER NYC.

Many farmers' markets accept cash, SNAP/EBT, debit/credit, WIC and Senior FMNP coupons. They may also offer Health Bucks for EBT users -- for every $5 spent in EBT, customers receive a $2 Health Buck coupon to purchase additional fruits and vegetables. For an updated list of farmers' markets near you (including days/hours of operation) visit nyc.gov/health and search "farmers markets."

Office for People with Developmental Disabilities: The Front Door The Front Door is the way OPWDD connects people to the services they need and want. Once you enter, a person-centered planning process begins which helps you learn about and access service options taking your needs and desires into consideration. It will also give you the chance to direct your own service plan or help your family member or loved one as they direct theirs.
- The first step: Determine eligibility
- If eligible to receive services: Begin planning process
- Support and service options available: residential, employment, day habilitation, children’s services and aging services.
Contact the OPWDD regional office that covers your county (Manhattan 646-766-3220) to access the Front Door, or call the OPWWD Info Line at 1-866-946-9733.

Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) offering assistance with SNAP applications Many CBOs provide help completing SNAP applications and screening applicants for eligibility.
- They DO NOT provide interviews (the final step of the application process) - this is only done at the HRA locations listed above.
- Due to COVID-19, interviews may not be required or may be completed by phone. HRA will contact you if they need more information after you apply. For the Site Finder, enter your address and choose Site Type “Food Stamp Center” to find a CBO offering assistance with SNAP applications close to you.
- It is difficult to confirm the status of these organizations, so please always contact them before visiting. The Hunter College NYC Food Policy Center is continually reaching out to try to verify opening hours and temporary closures.
- If you cannot go to a location, you can request reasonable accommodations (if you are working, elderly, or disabled; if you have problems with child care; if you have trouble traveling to a SNAP Center). Call HRA’s infoline at 718-557-1399 (free language translation services are available) or contact HRA online here.
