Every Day is a Miracle Offers Help to More Than 4,000 Individuals Monthly in the Bronx

by Cameron St. Germain

What they do: Every Day is a Miracle is an organization that dedicates its efforts to helping low-income families overcome socio-economic difficulties, improve quality of life, and empower individuals to become productive citizens in their community.

How they do it: What began as a group of people distributing bags of food to 60 hungry families has since grown to become a multi-faceted attack on poverty, by helping many families through emergency food supplies, SNAP screenings, social service referrals, and educational programs.

Mission: “To alleviate food insecurity and improve socio-economic challenges in Bronx’s underserved communities by providing families, seniors, and residents with resources to help them become self-sufficient and productive members of their community.”

Latest project/campaign: This past summer, the Food Relief Assistance Program transitioned from a traditional food pantry model to the revolutionary, client choice alternative. As its name suggests, the client choice food pantry model, provides pantry clients the opportunity to choose their own food items based on dietary restrictions, familiar recipes, and cultural, religious, and individual preferences. Clients take an active role in providing for their own nutritional wellbeing as they “shop” among the food-filled tables organized into food groups and select different foods in accordance with nutrition and family size guidelines. This model cuts back on waste while also increasing families’ consumption of nutritious food, since clients select only those items they KNOW their families will eat.
